::'Feast Should Be Dedicated To Kids
Posted on 25-07-2010
The feast of saints Anne and Joaquim, celebrated across the state, is more famously known as the 'Touxeanchem Fest' or the cucumber feast at the St Anne's church in Talaulim, about 12 km from Panaji. It's a tag that parish priest Fr Lourdinho Pereira would like to change.

"People have forgotten that the celebration is famous here for the faith people of all religions have that praying to St Anne will begot a childless couple a child. Over the years, the faith has been diluted by the mere act of offering cucumbers. This has to change," says Fr Pereira. He would like the feast to be rechristened in local culture as the "Burgeachem fest" (children's feast).

It may be easier said than done. Traditionally, thousands of people of all faiths and from across Goa come for the feast at Santana, as the village is affectionately called, seeking a variety of blessings. While bachelors pray: Senhora, tomai colher, dai me mulher (Lady (St Anne) take this spoon and give me a bride), spinsters pray: Senhora, tomai urido, dai me marido (Lady take this pulse and give me a husband). Newly weds and childless couples pray: Senhora, tomai pepino dai me menino (Lady take this cucumber and give me a child). The successful fulfilment of the latter wish over the years, has ensured the vegetable has gained special prominence on this day.

As interesting as the feast's name is the fact that this towering church caters to a population of just 700 Catholics, one of the smallest in Goa. However, come the feast, and a blanket of the faithful, numbering thousands, covers the grounds.

"When the church was built in the 16th century, there were about 12,000 Catholics and five priests. However, people migrated from the village after a plague affected it in the 17th century. The ruins of houses abandoned by villagers still exist by the side of the church, says villager Alex Rodrigues.

Meanwhile, the July 26-feast will be held on August 1. Historian Fr Nascimento Mascarenhas said that this is because the feast is normally celebrated on a Sunday and July 26, this time, is a Monday."
