::ECI Software Will Check Errors In Electoral Rolls

PANAJI: Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Wednesday said a new software which the election commission of India (ECI) is planning to introduce soon will rule out double registration

"The software will help automatically delete a name or notices will be sent asking for a person's preference if he is enrolled in two constituencies," said Kamat.

Agreeing with house members who complained about the error-ridden electoral roll, Kamat said his own voter's card had errors at one stage. Agreeing that registration should be simple and hassle-free, he said online registration will be a reality soon after ECI approves it.

Meanwhile, the CM said computerization of sub registrar's offices in Margao, Panaji and Mapusa had smoothened their day-to-day functioning and all remaining offices will be computerized soon.

Replying to the debate on demand for grants to notary services, election office and other departments on Wednesday, Kamat conceded that the government's image is impacted by the quality of services in these offices.

The computerization of the Margao sub registrar's office and subsequently, in Mapusa and Panaji, had improved performance and the common man had benefited as records and documents were available faster, said the CM. "The same model will be replicated in all sub registrar's offices," he added.

Kamat said the appointment of a full-fledged law secretary will help in restructuring the entire department. Earlier the law secretary had additional responsibilities. "But now that we have a full-fledged law secretary, he will restructure the entire department in two months," he said.

Additionally, separate joint secretaries would be appointed for each department so that the work referred to them for opinion can be expedited. House members had pointed out that referrals to law department were kept pending for a long time.

Regarding a branch office of the administrative tribunal in South Goa, Kamat said the process had been initiated, but lack of accommodation for housing had caused delays. "We need minimum 400 sq m near Margao bus stand," said Kamat.
